Yay, insanity! (aka Blinky's top ten favourite insane comic characters!)

School is almost over and my reports are written and in! Time to post!

I've decided this time to post something entirely related to my own interests. You see, anyone who knows me online would also know that I have... well, let's say a bit of a soft spot for the wackier characters out there.

No, not wackier in the 'funny' sense. Wackier in the sense that they are completely fricking off their gourd :-). And yes, I know that most superheros have a degree of insanity. I mean duh, they're dedicating their lives to dressing in spandex and beating people up. 'Just has issues' characters aren't what I'm talking about here. I love the characters that are clearly, certifiably insane. They might be able to cover it at times, they might have good coping skills, but when it gets down to it, they're really not all there.

You want a why? Well, come on, they say conflict is the essence of story. What could be more interesting than a character who already comes with their own inner conflict? They aren't just fighting the world around them, they're fighting themselves as well. It's fascinating stuff.

Anyway, without further delay I present the first of four posts on a singular theme:

Blinky's top ten favourite insane comic characters!

10. The Hulk/Bruce Banner
Who is he?
Dude, come on. This guy wrote the book on being a total nutcase. Bruce Banner's a geeky scientist type who was abused by his father. The Hulk's his repressed anger come out to play. And then, of course, there's the other personalities...
So what's his problem?
Well, Dissociative Identity Disorder (or Multiple Personality, as it's better known), is the main one. There are lots of Hulks in Banner, though luckily only a few that tend to present themselves. He's also got major anger issues and possible post traumatic stress syndrome. And he's displayed all sorts of other wacky symptoms in the past, like blackouts and zoning out into a fugue state. He's not real healthy, basically.
Scans?

Okay!

Here's a couple from Peter David's run. #377, actually. Psychoanalysis from inside Bruce Banner's brain.

Later on, in #19 of the new series, we get a look at a lot of Hulks in Banner's head. Including Clown Hulk! Why you not like Clown hulk!?

And there's this, which rather sums up the whole thing.

9. The Badger/Norbert Stykes
Who is he?
A Vietnam vet who was sexually and emotionally abused as a child, as well as being captured and held prisoner during the war. Unsurprisingly, he completely cracked.
So what's his problem?
Again, Dissociative Identity Disorder. He has at least seven different personalities. Also, while most of them are relatively stable, one's a bonafide sociopath, one acts like Jim Carrey with martial arts on speed, and one's a dog. Yes, really.
Scans?

Imagine being married to a guy who regularly turns into another person? Mavis copes with it well, all things considered.

Nobert Stykes to Badger change. Oops.

Both of these where from Badger #63. Also, a couple of other personalities from the Prestige Format "Badger Berserk".

Emily the little girl:

And Pierre, the sociopath:

8. Ragdoll/Who knows? He doesn't really have any other identity other than 'son of previous Ragdoll'.

Who is he?
One of the Secret Six. One of the ones that even they admit is nuts. His dad hated him as a child because he didn't inherit the family contortionist powers, so he went and had all of his joints replaced in order to replicate them. As you do. And he had his genitals cut off while he was there, because they were in the way. Yeah.
So what's his problem?
God, where do you start? Probable surgery addiction. Bizarre actions and reactions. Talks to himself and also his dead friend, who he had stuffed and put in his room. As you do.
Scans?

Said dead friend from Secret Six #1:

Come on, we've all wanted to do it...

Also, wtf?

Stay tuned for three more tomorrow!

... Ragdoll stuffed Parademon? Wow. I think I'll have to read Secret Six. Don't know why I didn't yet - they're all so delightfully messed up.

I remember Badger. I think you did a post about him before? And hmmm. You almost make me want to read Hulk. I've never read his book before because I thought he was boring. So... where should I start?

Do read it, it's completely and seriously messed up. I love it :-).

Hulk? Well, I have to say, for me he's one of those characters who has had some great individual issues but no extended run that I could say was really brilliant. That said, Paul Jenkins' run (most recent series #12-28 and 32) was probably as consistent as it got. I do like Peter David as a writer but his Hulk run was all over the place for me...
