Gigantic list of things to do before I go...
...is slowly being whittled down. THERE'S LIKE FOUR DAYS TO GO OMG!!!

*takes deep breath*

Ok, so I will be working in East London. I've booked a hostel for the first week at least, but I really should try to find either a) a one bedroom flat, b) a studio flat or c) a room in a shared flat.

Gumtree London seems like a reasonable place to look, and there are a few other places with decent classifieds. But I have to ask, because I am strange and it would be nice to flat share with people who appreciate the value of a conversation about, say, cracky Torchwood fanfic on the web b:-). Does anyone know of a classifieds site that favours geeky people? Surely there must be some fan types in London looking for flatmates!

Also, the new doctor! He looks... interesting. I actually would have liked to see Paterson Joseph as Eleven, but I have to say that his earnest conversation in the Confidential special about having to keep the fact that he had been cast as the next fricking doctor from the world kinda won me over :-).

Hasn't stopped the internet from exploding over the news of his casting though :-).

I'm the same - I was disappointed for a few moments, then the excitement of a new Doctor overwhelmed that, and by the time I saw Matt Smith's enthusiasm in the interview (Hand waggling! He told his dad!), I was won over completely.

Good luck in London! Pack your woollies!

His waggling hands were hypnotic :-).

And I fear that I do not actually have the amount of woollies that one should reasonably have if going to London in winter. Steps to rectify that have failed miserably on account of the fact that all the clothes in the stores are fricking summer clothes right now.

My current solution will be to pile on my thermal underwear and aquire outer clothes in London. *nods sagely*

My brother is living in London at the moment (though he's coming back on the 16th) and says it's bitterly cold at the moment. I suggest you put a priority on thick warm socks and a very warm sleeping bag that can be unzipped all the way so that it can double as a duvet when you have your own bed.

Unfortunately, I don't think the flat he's vacating would be suitable for you as it's in Brent (northwest London).

I'm torn between being apprehensive and excited about Matt Smith. On the one hand, Steven Moffat picked him out and described his auditions as showing a `bold and brand new take on the Time Lord', so we know he's got acting chops at least and isn't going to try to be another Tennant or Baker. On the other hand, that description itself makes me a wee bit nervous and he's younger than me! My first reaction to seeing him was, `Oh dear. I hope he does something about that hair', which then caused me to feel very old.

Having discussed it with others, I'm now hoping that his new companion will be someone who tries to treat the over 900-year-old Time Lord as a son rather than a potential boyfriend. That would be an amusing take on things.

Honestly, I'm more excited at this stage at Moffat taking over. I was getting a little bit sick of:
The Doctor: Please surrender! Let me help you! I'm giving you a chance.
Villian: What? But I'm winning, you fool. Why would I surrender?
The Doctor: I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry. *destroys opponent utterly*

Plus the fanboying of authors. Dickens and Shakespeare worked because they had decent storylines. Christie and the giant wasp did not. It's really something that should be done sparingly.

Pleased to potentially be having more episodes like Blink and The Empty Child.
