On becoming a homosexual...
Okay, okay. Just for those who are morbidly curious, here's the chapter of "On Becoming a Women" about homosexuality.

See this post for explanations of the book and how I came across it.

ETA: People have asked lots of questions about all of the scans. I therefore proudly present the FAQ. Read and be enlightened.

When was this written/published? I'd guess some time in the 50's. I hope society has evolved a bit since then. Because a LOT of modern women would take offense to a lot of this piece, even if you cut out the bits about homosexuality.

Controlled by her parents, until she's a wife;
A slave to her husband the rest of her life.

(Not the poem I was trying to find, but it does nicely)

The Lady's Reward

Lady, lady, never start
Conversation toward your heart;
Keep your pretty words serene;
Never murmur what you mean.
Show yourself, by word and look,
Swift and shallow as a brook.
Be as cool and quick to go
As a drop of April snow;
Be as delicate and gay
As a cherry flower in May.
Lady, lady, never speak
Of the tears that burn your cheek-
She will never win him, whose
Words had shown she feared to lose.
Be you wise and never sad,
You will get your lovely lad.
Never serious be, nor true,
And your wish will come to you-
And if that makes you happy, kid,
You'll be the first it ever did.

Wow, he even managed to personally insult vast numbers of women who aren't sexually interested in girls, just for not 'maturing' to the point where their boyfriends are more important than their female friends.

I've shared beds with female friends - some of whom were gay/bi - and none of them ever 'manifested an undue interest' in my body. Maybe I should be insulted ...

Someone had posted on metaquotes an hilarious explanation of why a lot of homophobic males took for granted than any gay man was obviously going to try to get in his pants. Wish I could find it...

Ugh. Ughhhhhh. I normally don't swear, but if you could actually hear me, I'd be expressing my feelings towards this artical in a very colourful manner.

I think some straight people might go through a period where they think they're gay, like some gay people might go through a period where they think they're straight.

This article, on the other hand, tries to turn homosexualtiy into a horrible malfunction that must be fixed at all costs.

Is it me but are they're trying to equate pedophilia with homosexualtiy? If they are, ughhhhhh.

I don't remember the dorm having a fire drill to search for the lesbians down the hall who might infect them with gay!

I don't think my girlfriend would appreciate that either. She didn't have any trouble "transitioning", she's always been attracted to women.

I think my mother read that book, that would explain a lot....

What's really sad about this is that a guy in my Sociology class has the exact same view on homosexuality. He was going on and on about how "I have no problem with them, but they need to get some psychological help, because they're obviously messed up and that's totally not natural. It's depriving people from humankind's greatest aspiration, having children." The kid is seriously braindead. He probably gets all of his opinions from his uber-republican parents. Ugh.

Also, I'm using my icon of an actress who plays a lesbian in a lesbian show, just for this comment. >:3

I have a friend, who, while being an otherwise perfectly tolerant, nice guy, thinks that all homosexuals are unnatural, but he doesn't mind them as long as they're getting help.

I always have the urge to tell him that I'm bisexual when he tells me that.

I wish I had a lesbian icon.
