Not that we'll see him anytime soon. Australia TV has only just managed to show the first episode of the new series :-(.

Oh, he's cute! I've been watching the new Doctor Who series (downloading it; I have no idea when it's going to make it to the US) and I love Christopher Eccleston. He's so cheerful! But he's my first Doctor, so I have nothing to compare him to. One day I will catch up on the old episodes. :)

The fifth Doctor is cool. Plus, Turlough was with him (snarky coward who was one of the coolest guys to accompany the Doctor ever). But do be prepared to tolerate some shaky sets on the older ones :-).

Hail Eris!

IMO, Eccleston's thinking is way off -- you don't avoid typecasting by doing only one series/season, you do it by not being good enough to be memorable...The best any actor can hope for is to be associated with one great role, because two such roles are way too much to expect, and the alternative is to never have *any* great roles, not to have /others/. To take a fictional example, Lawrence Smith/Lorenzo Smythe (The Great Lorenzo) from _Double Star_, by Robert Heinlein, never had a truly great role until he was asked to impersonate the kidnapped politician Bonfort, and that turned out to be The One Great Role Of His Life.Note, though, that I'm not saying actors never ~get~ more than one great role, only that it doesn't often happen. Since Eccleston has done a bunch of varied roles already, it's not likely that he'll be unable to find any kind of roles to play besides eccentric time travelers, however. Let's just hope Tennant's willing to stick around for several years...

Apparently that whole "typecasting" thing is just an excuse, it was never intended for the first new Doctor to be around for more than a season. Russell T. Davies always intended for the Doctor to regenerate coming into the new season because it's such an important part of the whole Doctor Who mythos, and he wanted to get the new fans used to it.

In fact as I understand it, no-one was even supposed to know until the screening of the regeneration episode (I think it's a Christmas Special) but someone at the BBC blabbed and everyone went into damage control, which included the "typecasting" excuse.

Well, Eccleston doesn't seem as captivating to me as Doctor's no. 1, 2, 6, or 8. I fact, he seems a bit like an English soccer fan to me, or something like a cross between John Lennon and Ringo Star.

I followed a link to your wonderful *snicker* post on "becoming a woman" and started reading through your LJ. I didn't even know there was a new Dr. Who series ... but for me, Tom Baker will always be my favorite Doctor. Nobody else could pull off that rainbow scarf like he did, or offer up Jelly Babies like he could ... *whistful sigh*.

God I'm old.

I kinda liked the fifth best, but Tom Baker was classic, I admit. The ninth (current) Doctor is actually rather cool though. If the show gets played where you are you should take a look :-).
